Dark Halos around Spirals; no role for collisionless Cold Dark Matter particles

چکیده

From the analysis of high–quality optical rotation curves of 9 low–luminosity disk galaxies, we find that the properties of the dark halos around these objects are inconsistent with the halo density profile of the halos emerging in high resolution Cold Dark Matter N-body simulations. Dark halos around galaxies are almost constant density spheres, very different from the characteristic CDM ρ(r) ∝ r halos. This obviously challenges the theory (when the relevant particle is non–interacting), also because we find that the dark halo densities in the optical regions of spirals are unrelated to halos global properties, at gross variance with what it automatically occurs within this theory.

Are halos of collisionless cold dark matter collisionless?

We study whether gravitational scattering of halo dark matter particles by subhalos can connect two seemingly independent problems: the abundance of subhalos in dark matter halos and the cuspiness of the halos' inner density profiles. Our numerical experiments indicate that subhalos can cause the collisionless dark matter particles in the centers of main halos to diffuse. Combined with tidal ma...

The Distribution of Dark Matter in Spirals

In the past years a wealth of observations allowed to unravel the structural properties of the Dark Matter Halos around spirals. First, their rotation curves follow an Universal profile (URC) that can be described in terms of an exponential thin stellar disk and a dark halo with a constant density core, whose relative importance increases with galaxy luminosity. Careful studies of individual ob...

Self-Interacting Dark Matter

Spergel and Steinhardt have recently proposed the concept of dark matter with strong self-interactions as a means to address numerous discrepancies between observations of dark matter halos on subgalactic scales and the predictions of the standard collisionless dark matter picture. We review the motivations for this scenario and discuss some recent, successful numerical tests. We also discuss t...

Is a Simple Collisionless Relic Dark Matter Particle Ruled Out?

The central densities of dark matter (DM) halos are much lower than predicted in cold DM models of structure formation. Confirmation that they have cores with a finite central density would allow us to rule out many popular types of collisionless particle as candidates for DM. Any model that leads to cusped halos (such as cold DM) is already facing serious difficulties on small scales and hot D...

WARM DARK MATTER Clues to Primordial Phase Density from the Structure of Galaxy Halos

The Cold Dark Matter paradigm successfully explains many phenomena on scales larger than galaxies, but seems to predict galaxy halos which are more centrally concentrated and have a lumpier substructure than observed. Endowing cosmic dark matter with a small primordial velocity dispersion preserves the successful predictions of the Cold Dark Matter scenario on large scales and improves the agre...
